The President of Argentina, Javier Milei<\/a>, has taken further steps towards censorship and against press freedom, revoking the credentials of several media outlets mentioned in a disputed report about an alleged Russian network spreading negative content about his administration.<\/p>\n

The affected outlets include \u00c1mbito Financiero, C5N, La Patriada FM, A24, El Destape, and Tiempo Argentino. Reporters from these outlets reported being denied entry into the Executive building after security personnel informed them that their names were on a list prohibiting entry, as ordered by the far-right president.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, others were unable to access the Congress of the Australian nation, despite holding valid credentials to cover legislative sessions and activities.<\/p>\n

\u00abThe government revoked my accreditation at the Casa Rosada, processed by El Tiempo Argentina, with no justification. An informal notice was given to me by a military guard who checked my name on a list and prohibited my entry,\u00bb journalist Tatiana Scorciapino stated in a message shared on social media platform X.<\/p>\n

However, she emphasized that despite the restrictions imposed by the La Libertad Avanza government, \u00abwe will continue to ask questions.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Similarly, journalist Javier Slucki from El Destape recounted his experience of being censored by Milei when he headed to the Executive headquarters on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

\u00abI arrived at the Casa Rosada as I do almost every day to cover events, but unlike usual, the entrance agent told me that my fingerprint was disabled.\u00bb<\/p>\n

The reporter, who was accredited at the Casa Rosada, noted that an official was waiting for journalists at the door with a list of those permitted or denied entry.<\/p>\n

He stated that the justification used to restrict access was the supposed \u00abmedia espionage through Russian services.\u00bb Additionally, they were informed that the involved newspapers, websites, and radios would have their fingerprints disabled until they \u00abclarified this issue.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA) also condemned the government\u2019s \u00abarbitrary\u00bb decision to revoke the credentials of several journalists.<\/p>\n

\u00abThe argument that some of the outlets where these professionals work were mentioned in an investigation into alleged disinformation operations funded by power-linked sectors in Russia is insufficient and undermines the presumption of innocence until the judiciary determines responsibilities, also implying a limitation on access to public information,\u00bb they expressed on their social media.<\/p>\n

Political reactions have also surfaced, with Union for the Fatherland deputy Nicol\u00e1s Trotta announcing that he would propose a resolution for the Lower House of Congress to condemn Milei\u2019s censorship of the media outlets El Destape, FM La Patriada, A24, Tiempo Argentino, and \u00c1mbito Financiero.<\/p>\n

\u00abThis is harmful to the republican and constitutional principle of governmental transparency and the right to press freedom,\u00bb stated the proposal, according to El Destape.<\/p>\n

Controversial Report Used as Justification for Revoking Credentials and Promoting Censorship<\/span><\/h3>\n

Arguing for this controversial decision to withdraw credentials, Milei cited a disputed report by the media organization openDemocracy, which claims that Russia paid thousands of dollars to Argentine media to publish content against the \u00ablibertarian\u00bb administration.<\/p>\n

According to the article, published last week, a Russian network identified as \u00abThe Company\u00bb allegedly disbursed around $283,000 for over 250 notes and opinion articles published in 23 digital outlets between April and October 2024, related to Argentina\u2019s critical economic situation, the social and human costs of fiscal austerity measures implemented from the Casa Rosada, and the increasing diplomatic tensions with other governments in Latin America.<\/p>\n

However, the editor of OpenDemocracy, Diana Carboni, acknowledged that there is no evidence \u00abthat this money was actually paid.\u00bb<\/p>\n

\u00abWe have no proof if it was paid to a medium, a journalist, or an intermediary,\u00bb she asserted in an interview with Argentine news channel La Naci\u00f3n+.<\/p>\n

Libertarian Assault on the Press in Argentina<\/span><\/h3>\n

This censorship measure by Milei\u2019s administration is not new. On May 23, 2025, new criteria for journalists\u2019 accreditation at the Casa Rosada were established, including stringent documentation requirements and the implementation of a scoring system, with the power to revoke permissions for \u00abserious offenses\u00bb based on executive parameters and criteria.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, in September 2025, in an unprecedented action, the La Libertad Avanza government decided to withdraw accreditations from journalists at the Clar\u00edn newspaper covering activities at the Casa Rosada.<\/p>\n

Milei\u2019s latest assault on press freedom occurs amidst a backdrop of rising tensions fueled by stigmatizing and degrading remarks from the \u00ablibertarian\u00bb against journalists, coupled with budget cuts to public media and accusations of censorship, violence, and repression faced by journalists reporting on protests and demonstrations in Argentina.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
