Following the ruling sealing the extradition of Adriana Rivas<\/strong>, a former DINA agent and key aide to Manuel \u2018Mamo\u2019 Contreras, Deputy Roberto Celed\u00f3n<\/strong> (Ind.) urged the Australian government to release its intelligence files<\/strong> related to the role played by the United States (U.S.) in the coup d\u2019\u00e9tat<\/a> <\/strong>against President Salvador Allende in September 1973, which marked the onset of the military dictatorship.<\/p>\n

After years of evasion, judicial delays, and a flight from Chile in 2010, the Australian Federal Court dismissed<\/strong> on Tuesday the appeal<\/strong> made by the defense of the accused, known by the alias \u00abLa Chani,\u00bb which sought to challenge the Australian government\u2019s decision to authorize her extradition<\/strong> to face justice in Chile for her role in kidnappings, torture, and disappearances during the regime of Augusto Pinochet.<\/p>\n

Specifically, Rivas<\/a> is facing prosecution for the cases \u201cConferencia I\u201d, \u201cConferencia II\u201d and the \u201cReinalda Pereira\u201d incident<\/strong>, as a co-author of serious crimes including the qualified kidnapping of communist militants such as Reinalda Pereira\u2014who was five months pregnant at the time of her detention\u2014Fernando Navarro, Lincoy\u00e1n Berr\u00edos, Horacio Cepeda, Juan Fernando Ortiz, H\u00e9ctor V\u00e9liz, and V\u00edctor D\u00edaz. All of them were tortured and disappeared.<\/p>\n

Australian Spies Collaborated with the CIA in Intervention Against Allende<\/span><\/h3>\n

It is worth noting that in 2021, the U.S. National Security Archive declassified a series of documents<\/strong> revealing the collaboration Australia provided to the CIA to support the U.S. intervention in Chile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the documents, in 1971, during the early months of President Salvador Allende\u2019s government, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service<\/strong> (ASIS), at the request of the CIA, opened a secret office in Santiago<\/strong> to conduct \u201ccovert espionage operations<\/strong>,\u201d showcasing \u201cthe multinational effort to destabilize the government<\/strong> of the Popular Unity.\u201d<\/p>\n

A group of equipment and undercover agents<\/strong> from Australia arrived in the capital.<\/p>\n

During the operation, which lasted for 18 months, the spies interacted with Chilean informants recruited by the U.S. and drafted intelligence reports<\/strong> that were sent directly to the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.<\/p>\n

The agents exited the country entirely after the coup on September 11, 1973<\/strong>, which led to 17 years of dictatorship marked by murders, disappearances, and torture.<\/p>\n

At that time, the government of liberal Billy McMahon (1971-1972) had been replaced by the administration of labor leader Edward Gough Whitlam (1972-73), who ordered the director of Australia\u2019s intelligence services to terminate operations in Chile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
