Original article: Proyecto para instalar estatua de Piñera en Santiago será votado en la Cámara: Financiamiento saldría de colectas públicas, donaciones y aportes privados
Following its approval in the Interior Government Commission, the bill authorizing the installation of a monument to former President Sebastián Piñera in Plaza de la Ciudadanía, Santiago, is now ready for a vote in the Chamber of Deputies.
During the legislative process, one of the most contentious issues was the financing of the project. Ultimately, the deputies supported financing through «public contributions» obtained via public fundraising, donations, and private support.
In this regard, deputies voted in favor of allowing nationwide fundraising efforts, in coordination with the Sebastián Piñera Echenique Foundation, despite earlier concerns raised by former deputy Matías Ramírez (PC), who proposed banning public collections and any advertising that glorified the former president. His proposal was ultimately rejected.
According to the Chamber’s bulletin, any excess funds from these contributions will be used to finance publications about Piñera’s legacy and other initiatives determined by the honorary commission designated to carry out the project.
This commission will include a representative from the board of the Sebastián Piñera Echenique Foundation, who will serve as president; the rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile; two deputies and two senators elected by the Chamber and the Senate; the mayor of Santiago; and two former ministers or undersecretaries who collaborated with Piñera’s administrations, chosen by the foundation’s board.
