Amidst significant global transformations, Chile will host the 1st International Congress on Social History, Memory, and Education: Horizons for the 21st Century.

This event is scheduled for October 28-29, 2026, and is organized by alumni from the Department of History and Geography at the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE), which will also serve as the venue for the congress.

“We aim to foster a broad space for reflection and academic, political, and pedagogical debates regarding social history, memory, and education in Chile and Latin America, approached from a critical and emancipatory perspective,” explains Diego Calderón, one of the event’s organizers.

Calderón, an alumnus and current academic at UMCE, emphasizes the importance of these gatherings in the face of the current global and national context.

“In light of the rise of authoritarian and neo-fascist discourses, we believe it is vital to strengthen instances of dialogue and knowledge production committed to democracy, human rights, and social transformation, which can influence public debate,” he stresses.

Moreover, Viviana Bocanegra, a member of the Congress’s Pedagogical Committee and affiliated with Casa Memoria Suba in Colombia, suggests that this congress will facilitate the sharing of “experiences, research, and educational practices that will enhance memory spaces in Latin America, aimed at building peace and an ethical commitment to victims.”

Call for Proposals Open

Until April 17, interested individuals can submit their proposals in four categories: individual presentations, thematic panels, teaching and community experiences, and workshops or research labs.

The event will take place in a hybrid format, and certificates of participation will be provided for presenters. Proposals will be accepted exclusively via this form.
