The latest report from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) revealed a significant decrease in poverty and extreme poverty figures, reaching their lowest levels since 2012 in the country.
According to the report, in 2024, poverty rates fell for the third consecutive year, with the poverty rate at 23.1% and extreme poverty at 3.5%.
The IBGE attributed this decline to two main factors: the recovery of the job market and the continued provision of social benefits such as the Family Program, as reported by local media outlets including Folha de Sao Paulo.
Overall, the number of people living in poverty decreased by 8.6 million, and the count of those in extreme poverty dropped from nearly 57.6 million in 2023 to 48.9 million in 2024, marking the first time this figure has fallen below 50 million.
Furthermore, the IBGE noted that since Brazil does not have an official poverty line or extreme poverty line, the institute utilizes the criteria recommended by the World Bank for its calculations. According to this framework, the poverty line is set at those living on less than $6.85 a day in purchasing power parity (PPP), while extreme poverty is defined as living on $2.15 a day.
The report also indicates that poverty disproportionately affects informal workers, with 20.4% of those employed without formal contracts living in poverty, compared to 6.7% among formally contracted workers.
