Deputy Luis Cuello (PC), alongside Deputies Daniela Serrano (PC), Juan Santana (PS), and Boris Barrera (PC), has sent a letter to Chamber President Jorge Alessandri requesting that the «National Reconstruction» bill proposed by the government be reviewed by multiple committees rather than solely the Finance Committee, warning that solely doing so could represent a procedural flaw in its processing.
This request coincides with the impending submission of the initiative, set to be introduced in the coming days, which includes nearly 40 measures across five areas—from tax and labor reforms to changes in security and sectoral permits—and which the Kast administration seeks to fast-track in Congress.
In this context, the lawmakers caution that the proposal is of an “omnibus” or “miscellaneous” nature, whose broad scope necessitates specialized analysis by various legislative committees. They also question why the discussion should be limited to a single setting, warning that this could undermine the depth of debate and the adequate review of its impacts.
Therefore, in their letter, they request that upon the bill’s entry, it be forwarded to two or more permanent committees based on its areas of expertise, as it tackles issues related to labor, education, tax policy, housing, and public safety.
In this regard, Deputy Cuello criticized the manner in which the Executive plans to process the initiative, asserting that “the government is undoubtedly using this ploy,” and urged the Chamber’s leadership to ensure a democratic debate.
“Today, we demand that this bill not only be reviewed by the Finance Committee but also by other relevant committees in accordance with the rules. This will allow for a well-informed debate and not this maneuver the government has put forth to expedite a covert tax reform,” the parliamentarian stated.
