In celebration of Dance Month (April 29), Matucana 100 Cultural Center is showcasing a special program throughout April, featuring contemporary dance works, collective creation processes, and heritage proposals that connect the history and present of dance in Chile.
The lineup includes performances such as Cumulonimbus, Agitadores, La Cacería, and the heritage program The Dance of Patricio Bunster, in collaboration with the MOVEDIZA festival.
The programming kicks off with “Cumulonimbus” (from April 2 to 4), a work inspired by contemporary phenomena like global economics, climate crisis, and information overload—processes that evolve with a speed and complexity that seem uncontrollable.
This piece presents a choreographic language of dynamic changes and contrasting textures, bridging the meditative and the chaotic, all accompanied by an original soundtrack from Chilean composer Santiago Farah. It is a co-production involving Thomas Bentin, Plataforma Mono, and Espacio Checoslovaquia.
The next featured work is “Agitadores” (from April 9 to 11), a performance that explores the construction of collective desire and the possibility of transformation into others.
This work delves into themes of community, resistance, transformation, and mobilization, inviting both performers and the audience to envision new ways of coexistence and collective action through body and movement.
The program continues with “La Cacería” (from April 16 to 18), directed by Rodrigo Pérez, which presents seven bodies on stage as a pack navigating the roles of prey and predator.
This piece offers a reflection on human history as a vast choreography of endless pursuit, where bodies wander at the brink of collapse, lost and without a place. In 50 minutes, the performance constructs a scenic metaphor encompassing thousands of years of human history, migration, violence, survival, and civilization.
These three works are presented by Plataforma Mono, a network for creating and supporting performing arts since 2016, focusing on the development, experimentation, and artistic training in contemporary dance, connecting emerging artists with established figures in the international scene.
MOVEDIZA Festival and M100
As part of Dance Month and in collaboration with the MOVEDIZA festival, Matucana 100 will also present “The Dance of Patricio Bunster,” a heritage program performed by the Danza Espiral Company.
This proposal includes both large and small-scale choreographies by the renowned Chilean choreographer Patricio Bunster Briceño, a key figure in the establishment of dance in Chile during the late 20th century and a pioneer of social dance in the country.
The program features pieces such as Tui Sum, In Spite of Everything, and Aurora, along with audiovisual recordings from the artist’s and company’s personal archive, creating a staging that dialogues between memory, archive, and contemporary performance.
On the 20th anniversary of his passing, these performances aim to bring his artistic legacy to new generations and to keep his choreographic and social ideas alive.
